Between 1950 and 1960 Ferenc Árok was a footballer with FK Jedinstvo. After his active sport career, he worked as a football coach for FK Novi Sad and in his first season they moved up to the first division, making him the youngest ever first league coach of in Yugoslavia. Arok later became president of the Yugoslav Football Coaches Association. From 1969 he worked in Australia as a coach for league clubs and for seven years, 1983-89, served as the head coach of the Australian national team.
At the peak of his career, Arok was honored by the Queen of England and was very popular in Australia, as he took the national team to the Seoul Olympics, where they defeated Nigeria and his home country Yugoslavia. Australia reached the quarter-finals and only lost to the two finalists, Brazil and the Soviet Union. In 1989, Arok began working again at the league level, first for the St George Saints and from 1994 to 1996 for South Melbourne.
