Biography

Sweden’s Hans Westberg had a lengthy career as both an ice hockey player and coach. As a player Westberg represented several clubs as an offensive and goal-scoring defender, beginning with Mora IK in 1957. During the 1960s and 1970s he represented Gävle GIK and Skellefteå AIK, in addition to earning four caps with the Swedish national team. After his playing career Westberg became the coach of the Dutch national team in 1977, helping them to move from Group C to Group A in two years. In 1980 he took charge of the side at the Lake Placid Olympics, where they tied for ninth with West Germany. He coached the Dutch team for another year before becoming the coach of the Norwegian national team, including returning to the Olympics for the 1984 Games in Sarajevo. Following the Olympics Westberg returned to Sweden to coach the domestic team Gislaveds SK.
