Biography

After playing for Preston North End reserves for a couple of seasons, Herbert Butterworth broke into the first team in the 1906/07 season. He joined nearby Oldham Athletic in 1908, before moving south and spending five seasons at Queens Park Rangers and Millwall, before ending his playing career as a guest, for just five games, with Chelsea in 1915/16.

The War years interrupted Butterworth’s career but in July 1919, the Bolton referee John Howcroft, who was consul to the Netherlands FA, got Butterworth a job as trainer at Dodrecht FC. However, the following May, Butterworth was on his way to Sweden with plans for him to coach the national squad for the forthcoming Olympics. Whilst in Sweden he helped with coaching at Hammarby on a match-by-match, basis before joining IFK Norrköping for the 1921/22 season. Nothing more is known about Butterworth after that.
