Biography

A Nottingham textile designer, Arthur Hines became one of the most influential men on the Nottinghamshire Football Association for many years. He had a playing career of little distinction as a wing-half with Christ Church FC, but he went on to become a leading referee and administrator.

Hines represented Nottinghamshire on the FA Council for 55 years (chairman from 1907) and was an FA vice-president. He served on many FA committees including referees and international selection committees. As a referee, Hines officiated in several Home International Championship matches and was linesman in three FA Cup Finals. He was also one of the linesmen for the historic Denmark versus France “A” game at the 1908 Olympics, which saw an Olympic record 18 goals scored in one game.

Hines was a keen cricketer and was for many years the secretary of the Christ Church Cricket Club. He was also interested in cycling and was the Nottingham representative on the National Cyclists’ Union.
