It was little surprise that A. Norris should be selected to referee the 1908 Olympic match between Great Britain and Canada because he was one of the most experienced lacrosse officials in Britain at the time. He regularly refereed in the first division of the North of England Men’s Lacrosse Association. In the year before the Olympics, he refereed most of the leading matches including the Northern Flags final between South Manchester and Old Hulmeians. That same year, Norris also refereed the match between the North of England and the touring Canadians, as well as the England versus Wales international match. He regularly officiated at the annual North versus South game, and also the regular fixture between England and the Duke of Argyll’s Team.
