Nicolaas Lingen “Lin” Meiring was a South African swimmer who went on to be a surgeon in the United States. Meiring was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in 1933. He took up swimming, which led to him being selected to the national team. Meiring swam in the 100 metres backstroke at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he finished in eighth place. Two years later Meiring finished fourth in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games 110 yards backstroke.
Following his swimming career Meiring went to medical school and became an ear, nose and throat doctor in Heritage Hills, Oklahoma City. Meiring was one of the first ENTs to use a surgical laser, with the procedure being shown on local news.
