Biography

In addition to being a referee for the Argentine Football Association (AFA) from 1953 to 1978, Ángel Coerezza also officiated at international fixtures during the 1970s. In 1970 Coerezza was selected to officiate at the FIFA World Cup in Mexico, taking charge of the group stage fixture between the hosts and Belgium. Later during the tournament, he refereed the quarter-final match between West Germany and England, in addition to being one of the assistant referees for the final between Brazil and Italy.

In 1976 Coerezza officiated in three games at the Montréal Olympics, including refereeing the match between France and Mexico. Two years later he had the honour of refereeing the opening match of the 1978 FIFA World Cup between West Germany and Poland, which turned out to be his final international assignment. After his retirement he served as the director of the AFA’s school of referees from 1979 to 1989.
