Biography

An international FIFA referee since 1968, Arnaldo Coelho is considered the greatest Brazilian referee of all time, together with Romualdo Arppi Filho. The two are the only Brazilian referees to have directed a World Cup final.

In particular, Coelho, after having directed the France-Hungary match in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, was also chosen for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain where, after West Germany-England, he officiated the Italy-West Germany final at the Madrid Bernabéu Stadium. Coelho’s palmarès also include the 1981 FIFA U-20 World Cup final in Sydney, Australia, between West Germany and Qatar and the 1979 Paraguay-Chile America’s Cup final. Coelho also directed the Copa Libertadores (the South American Champions Cup) in 1988, won by Nacional de Montevideo.

In his career there were also two appearances at the Olympics: at Montréal in 1976 he was involved in the Poland-Iran match and 12 years later, in Seoul he officiated the USSR-USA match.
