In 2000 Awni Hassouneh served as the linesman in five football matches at the Sydney Olympics, including in the final between Cameroon and Spain. Two years later Hassouneh became the first Jordanian to officiate matches in the FIFA World Cup, with him working as the assistant referee in three fixtures during the tournament. For the Asian Football Confederation, he also worked at the AFC Asian Cup tournaments in 2000 and 2007. Hassouneh officiated in more than 100 matches during his career, also working as a lecturer in football law for various federations.
