Biography
Although born in South Wales, boxing referee and administrator Dick Gittins spent most of his life in the North Wales seaside town of Rhyl, where he was not only involved in boxing but was also chairman of both the town´s amateur swimming and motorboating clubs. Gittins was the founder chairman of the Northern Division of the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association and was a member of both the British and Welsh ABA Councils. Additionally, he was tournament secretary of the Gwynedd Sporting Club and a vice-president of the Birkenhead Amateur Boxing Club.
Gittins officiated at the 1965 and 1967 European Amateur Boxing Championships at Berlin and Rome respectively. He also went to the 1964 and 1968 Olympics. He was in charge of the featherweight final at Tokyo and the bantamweight final at Mexico City four years later. In addition, Gittins was a judge at a total of five finals, including the George Foreman v Jonas Čepulis heavyweight contest in 1968.
