Biography

Hailing from Darlington, H. Gray was a Football League referee in the formative years of the League. He also refereed FA Cup ties, and was one of the linesmen for the 1908 Olympic Games semi-final between Great Britain and the Netherlands. The following year at Ilford, he ran the line in the FA Amateur Cup final, in which Clapton beat Eston United 6-0. It was the biggest win in the Amateur Cup final at the time and was not bettered until 1925, when Northern Nomads beat Stockton 7-1. One of Clapton’s goals in the 1909 final was scored by the 1908 Olympic gold medallist Clyde Purnell
