Biography
The son of a local policeman, boxing referee and judge James England was born in the Gorbals district of Glasgow. England served as a commando in the Royal Marines and reached the rank of captain. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and mentioned in despatches. During his time in the Navy, England played rugby for the Combined Services and county rugby for Kent
After leaving the Navy England become one of the leading international boxing referees and judges after being appointed to the list of international referees by the European Boxing Association in 1959. England went on to officiate at all the leading international tournaments like the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and two Olympics. England was the group personnel director with the Rootes car company (later part of Chrysler) before joining the Rank Organisation in 1968. England committed suicide in 1972, the month after returning from the München Olympics. He was just 56-years-of-age at the time.
