Biography

Regarded as one of the best football referees to come from Gabon Jean-Fidèle Diramba officiated in matches at the 1987 Under-20 World Cup, the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and the final of the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations. Diramba will be mostly remembered, however, for being the referee in the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualification match between Morocco and Zambia, which Morocco won 1–0. In April 1993 all members of the Zambian football team, including the coach and support staff, died in a plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean shortly after take-off from Libreville in Gabon. Many Zambian fans accused Diramba of making several poor decisions in the match, with protests taking place in Lusaka the day after the game.
