Louw Hekkema worked as a speed skating judge for both the Royal Dutch Skating Federation and the ISU. Hekkema made his international début when he officiated at the 1987 European Women’s Championships in Groningen. In 1994 he was one of the speed skating referees for several of the women’s events at the Lillehammer Olympics. Hekkema worked as a civil servant in the road and hydraulic engineering department in Haren, where he was involved in the construction of an ice rink in Noordlaren.
