Biography

Luigi Lamonica’s refereeing career began at a very young age. He first officiated at 14, débuted in Top League at 27 and in FIBA international games at 31 and, by 2021, now overage for the Italian championship, he still officiated games around the world based on his experience.

Lamonica’s list of officiating games has no equal in Italy: 23 finals for the Italian title, 9 Italian Cup finals, and 6 Euroleague finals, the last in 2019. He went on to become an international referee and was in charge at six European Championships (four times the final for gold), two men’s World Championships (one gold medal final), and two Olympic Games, directing three semifinals, two men’s and one women’s. In July 2019 Lamonica was awarded the title of Knight of the Italian Republic for his sporting merits.
