Biography

German handball referee Marcus Helbig officiated in domestic and international matches from 1993 to 2021. During his long career Helbig refereed in more than 600 matches for the German Handball Federation as well as more than 250 international games. He often worked with his compatriot Lars Geipel, with the pair officiating in matches at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics. They were also the officials for two Champions League finals held in Cologne (2017, 2019), with them officiating in World Championship matches from 2009 until 2017. One of Helbig’s final matches with Geipel was the bronze medal match at the 2020 European Championships in Stockholm, with the pair later named as Germany’s Referees of the Year.
