Born in the Russian-controlled Kingdom of Poland, Ruben Gelbord came to Sweden at the age of 12, where he joined IK Svea and practised football and athletic sports. Transferred to AIK Stockholm in 1900, he played as a defender in the senior team from 1903.
Gelbord then refereed over 1,000 matches in football, bandy, and ice hockey over a period of 30 years including two matches of the Olympic football tournament in 1912 and several Swedish championship finals in football and bandy. He became chairman of the Stockholm Football Association and a long-time member of the board of the Swedish Football Association (1907-19, 1922-33) and its selection committee (1912–20, 1922–33), frequently coaching the national team. During this time, he was also chairman of IF Linnéa (1922-25). Gelbord was a sports goods retailer. In 2022, he was inducted into the Swedish Football Hall of Fame.
