Biography

Stan Royle started his sporting career as a footballer with Heaton Chapel FC before spending four seasons as an amateur with Manchester City from 1918. Royle made just one first team appearance for City, on the right-wing, in the 1-0 defeat by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in April 1922. After his footballing days, Royle became involved with boxing and spent 21 years with the Hillsborough Boys Club in Sheffield. As a leading coach, he had many fine boxers in his care including Yorkshireman Bruce Woodcock, the former British, Commonwealth, and European heavyweight champion.

Royle was president of the Northern Counties, and the West Riding of Yorkshire Amateur Boxing Associations, and from 1947 served on the International Olympics Committee’s Boxing Panel, and was one of the officials for both the 1948 and 1952 Olympics.
