Volker Roth was appointed a FIFA international referee in 1978. He soon was chosen to officiate at top events, including the 1984 UEFA Championship in France and at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. After his playing years, Roth acquired appreciation as a manager in Germany and later joined the FIFA referee commissions for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. In 2000, the International Football Federation awarded him the prestigious FIFA Special Award.
