Youssef Mohammed

Youssef Mohammed had a lengthy refereeing career that began domestically in the 1910s. In the early 1920s, he was selected as a member of the Egyptian Football Federation’s first refereeing committee along with, among others, Hussein Hegazi and Riadh Shawki. In 1924 in Paris, he became the first Egyptian to referee at the Olympics, serving as a linesman in the final and a round one match, and as the referee in the replay of the bronze medal match. He also had a hand in selecting the players who represented Egypt at those Games. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, he was the referee for two matches and a linesman for one more.

Mohammed was also selected to referee at the inaugural World Cup in 1930, but did not attend after the team missed their ship. Thus he had to wait until 1934, when he served as both a referee and a linesman, and he also refereed during a qualifying match for the 1938 World Cup. After World War II, he was part of the Egyptian delegations to the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, but only as an advisor. After the 1952 Egyptian Revolution, however, Mohammed retired from his administrative duties.
