Jane Cederqvist

Jane Cederqvist was a Swedish swimmer who swam primarily distance freestyle, earning a silver medal at the 1960 Roma Olympics in the 400 metre freestyle. For that effort she was given the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal, the first woman so honored and the youngest at the time to receive it.

Cederqvist first came to prominence when she won a bronze medal at the 1958 World Junior Championships. She set two world records in here career, in the 800 metre freestyle on 17 August 1960 in Uppsala, and in the 1,500 freestyle on 8 September 1960, also in Uppsala. She also set European records in the 200 and 400 freestyles in May 1961.

Cederqvist retired from competition in 1961 to focus on her studies, earning a BA in 1970 and PhD in 1980, while studying the working class in Stockholm in the later 19th century. She worked for government, starting as department director at the National Audit Office for six years, and was then director of the Association of Local Authorities. In 1994 she moved to the Ministry of Industry and in 1998 became director of the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities. She stayed only one year at that position, becoming director-general of the Swedish Fortifications Agency in the Ministry of Finance in 1999. She also worked as a tax analyst.
