Åke Bergman was just 16-years-old, and the youngest starter in his event, when he competed in the 100 metres backstroke at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. He lived with his parents close to a bathhouse in Malmö where he became interested in swimming. Bergman also competed in water polo matches, but got injured in a grapple. Subsequently, he lost sight in one eye. His father owned A Bergmans Hatt & Mössfabrik, and Åke was trained as a hatter, spending his “journeyman’s” year in Paris.
