Janez Kocmur played tennis and basketball at school before his talents as a swimmer were spotted by coaches at a local pool. In 1957 Kocmur became the first Slovenian to swim the 100 metres in under a minute, with him winning six national titles for the Yugoslav team. At the 1959 Mediterranean Games he won silver in the 100 metres freestyle, silver in the 4×200 m freestyle relay, and bronze in the 4×100 m medley relay.
At the 1960 Roma Olympics Kocmur finished in 28th place in the 100 metres freestyle and in 13th place in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay. By 1965 he had retired from competitive swimming and started a career in tourism in Maribor.
