Carlos Nuzman

Carlos Nuzman was a professional volleyball player, competing from 1957-72 and playing on the Brazilian national team from 1962-68, including at the 1964 Olympics, and the 1962 and 1966 World Championships. He served as President of the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) from 1975-95. He has also been President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, from 1995-2012, and a member of the Pan American Sports Organization. By profession he was a lawyer and owned a real estate company.

Nuzman was made a member of the IOC in 2000 in his role as NOC President, serving until 2012, after which time he was made an Honorary IOC Member. Nuzman led the bid to obtain the 2016 Olympics for Rio de Janeiro and was the director of the 2016 Organizing Committee. He was President of the South American Sports Organisation (ODESUR) beginning in 2003. During his time on the IOC Nuzman was a member of the following commissions: Olympic Collectors (1998-2001), IOC 2000 (1999), Evaluation for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 (as representative of the NOCs, 2000-01), Coordination for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008 (2002-08), Marketing (2002-10), 2009 Congress (2006-09), and International Relations (2010-13).

After the 2016 Rio Olympics, Nuzman was criminally charged in October 2017 for allegedly paying IOC Members to obtain their votes for the 2016 Olympics. In November 2021 he was found guilty of corruption, criminal organization, money laundering, and tax evasion in relation to the 2016 Olympic bid and sentenced to 30 years and 11 months in prison. However, as of late 2022 he has not served any time as he has been free on appeal, but due to the ongoing legal process his Honorary Membership in the IOC was suspended.
