Terry Place was a US national volleyball player before she married the press spokesman of the German Volleyball Association, Christian Brandel. She then became a naturalised West German and was able to play for them at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The team finished sixth after losing the match for fifth place against Korea. In total, Place played in 289 international matches for the United States and 312 for Germany, and participated in two European and two World Championships. In 2015, she won the Over-50 World Championships.
In 1983, Place was named Volleyball Player of the Year in Germany. She played in Germany with SV Lohhof (1980-89, German Champion 1982-84, 1986-88, and German Cup Winner 1982-84 and 1986, VC Straubing (1989-90) and Bayern Lohhof (1990-95). In 1981 she also won the CEV Cup. Place and Brandel eventually divorced. She remarried, and worked as a physiotherapist in München.
