Francesco Dall’Olio started his high-level volleyball career under coach Franco Anderlini with Panini Modena, which won two Italian titles (1974, 1976), two Italian Cups (1979-80), and one European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1980. He moved to Volley Gonzaga Milano and Zinella Volley Bologna where he won the 1984 Italian Cup, before returning to Modena in 1984-85. With them he won another two Cups (1985-86), an Italian title (1986), a CEV Cup (1985), and one European Cup Winners’Cup (1986).
After playing with other teams (Paoletti Catania, Zinella Bologna, Marconi Volley), Dall’Olio joined Gabeca Montichiari in 1990, where he won another two European Winners’ Cups (1991-92), He ended his long career back home in Modena in the 1994-95 season, winning his fourth Italian title, his sixth Italian Cup, and a fifth European Cup Winners’ Cup.
With the Italian national team Dall’Olio earned 254 caps between 1972 and 1987. He took part at the 1976 Montréal Games, again under coach Franco Anderlini. Dall’Olio won a silver medal at the 1978 World Championships and a bronze at the 1984 Olympics with the Italian team.
After retiring Dall’Olio turned to coaching and in 1995-96 was with A.S. Pinuccio Capurso Volley of Gioia del Colle. Other clubs that he coached were Volley Ferrara, Pallavolo Modena (where in 1998 he won the Italian Cup, the SuperCup, and the European Champion Cup), Parma, 4Torri Ferrara, Piacenza, Perugia Volley, and Treviso. After some years away from coaching, in 2015 Dall’Olio became an assistant coach with the Italian women’s national team, and in 2017 was named coach of Reggio Emilia in the Second League.
