Tetsuo Sato was a Japanese volleyball player who was part of the national team from the late 1960s until the mid-1970s. After graduating from high school in Fukushima, Sato joined the Fujifilm Planets team. From there he was soon called up to the national team and was selected to play at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. At the Games the Japanese team won silver with Sato playing in the matches against the Soviet Union and the United States. Two years later he won gold at the Asian Games and bronze at the World Volleyball Championships, before earning another place on the Olympic team. At the 1972 München Games the Japanese team went one better than their previous appearance to win the gold medal, with Sato only playing in the final against East Germany. In 1974 he once again won gold at the Asian Games along with bronze at the World Volleyball Championships before playing at his final Olympics in 1976 in Montréal. This time Sato played in all five games for the team, but Japan lost to Cuba in the bronze medal match to finish fourth.
