Auguste Michant was the elder of two sons born to Albert Michant and Laure Schmidt; his father was a photographer in Hainaut, residing in Charleroi and Jumet in the 1880s to 1890s. A member of the Brussels Swimming and Water Polo Club, Michant was a longtime member of their highly successful water polo team as the goalkeeper, winning two silver medals at the 1900 Paris Olympics and 1908 London Olympics. Outside of sports, Michant was an automobile enthusiast, and a longtime member and secretary of the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium. In 1922, he was named to the Order of Leopold II.
