Brazilian sportsman Adhemar Grijó Filho represented the Fluminense club in Rio de Janeiro where he excelled in swimming and water polo. Across the two disciplines Grijó competed at multiple international events throughout the 1950s and 1960s and won a plethora of medals. At the 1952 South American Aquatics Championships in Peru he swam in the 100 and 200 metres breaststroke, winning silver and bronze, respectively. These results earned him a place on the Brazilian Olympic team for the 1952 Helsinki Games, where he swam in the 200 metres breaststroke. Two years later the South American Aquatics Championships took place in Brazil, with Grijó winning gold in the 100 metres butterfly, the 4 x 100 metres medley relay, and the water polo tournament.
From this point on Grijó focused more on water polo, which saw him win bronze at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico. He won another bronze at the 1959 Pan American Games before finally winning gold at the 1963 Games. He also recorded consistent performances at the South American Aquatics Championships, winning silver in 1956 followed by gold in 1958. After his first Olympic appearance in the pool in 1952 Grijó returned to the Games for the water polo tournaments in Roma and Tokyo.
