Biography

Bulgarian water polo player Toma Tomov won 12 domestic titles during his career including seven with CSKA. Tomov played in more than 270 matches for the national side including two editions of the World Championships (1973, 1975), two European Championships (1964, 1974), and the 1972 München Olympics. At the latter he was the top-scorer for Bulgaria during the tournament with 12 goals. The team, however, only won one match with a 7–4 victory against Japan to finish 11th out of the 16 teams that participated.

Following his playing career Tomov became a successful coach winning, ten domestic titles with CSKA from 1973 to 1983, along with two spells coaching the national team (1977–79, 1981–85). Outside of his native Bulgaria he also coached the Montpellier University Club in France from 1986 to 1998, taking the club from the fourth division to compete in the 1998 European Cup. Tragically Tomov died in November 2022 as the result of a motorcycle accident which left him spending more than a month in intensive care in a coma.
