Sami El-Sayed took up swimming at Cairo’s Maadi Sporting Club in the 1950s and competed nationally in that sport for several years. It was water polo, however, that took him international, as he represented Egypt in the tournament at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. There, the nation was eliminated in the preliminaries after losing its games to Belgium and the upcoming gold medallists from Hungary. By career he was an engineer, but he also remained active with his club teaching swimming to youth for many years following his retirement from competition, and he was also involved with the Maadi Water Polo Academy.
