Charles Devendeville

Charles Devendeville competed in underwater swimming at the 1900 Paris Olympics, the only time that event has been contested at the Olympics, and won the competition. He also played water polo with Tritons Lillois #2. Devendeville was a house painter. He joined the Army in 1904, serving in the 1e Régiment d’Infanterie, but moved to the reserves in 1905, serving with the 151e Régiment d’Infanterie from 1908-14. When mobilized in 1914, Devendeville was returned to the 1e Régiment d’Infanterie, with whom he was fighting when he was killed at Reims in September 1914.
