David McGregor was a member of the Motherwell team that dominated Scottish water polo in the 1930s. A Scotland international captain he competed at the 1936 Olympics and played in three of Great Britain’s seven matches, including the 8-2 win over Malta in their opening match. McGregor was a powerful full-back and once, during a match at the Corporation Baths, Motherwell, he broke a goalpost with a powerful throw from one end of the bath to the other. After World War II McGregor was superintendent at Falkirk Baths where he taught his son Bobby, the 1964 Olympic 100 metres freestyle silver medallist, to swim. David’s brother Bob was a player/coach with Fraserburgh FC.
