Hans-Georg Fehn began playing water polo while studying sports science. From 1962-75 he was a goalkeeper at SG Dynamo Magdeburg, at that time the top club in the GDR, helping them win five GDR Championships (1962-66), and placing second once and third four times at the European Cup from 1964-68. After very good performances for the youth team in 1965 he was named to the East German national team and played 180 international matches, finishing second at the European Championships in 1966 and sixth at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. At Mexico City Fehn was named the tournament’s best goalie and he was named to the All-Star Team. The team was coached by Rolf Bastel.
Later in 1968 the DTSB (East German Gymnastics and Sports Association) ended national support for water polo, hockey (field), basketball, and some other sports. International competitions in the capitalist world were forbidden, training sessions were cancelled, and water polo was no longer allowed in Magdeburg.
In the GDR Fehn was honored as a Master of Sports. After his athletic career he was a sports teacher at various schools in Magdeburg until 1989. After German reunification he worked as a swimming instructor, including in the former West Germany.
