German water polo player Michael Ilgner was on the squad eliminated in the group stage at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The previous year he won the bronze medal at the European Championships. Domestically, he played with SV Würzburg 05.
Ilgner studied economic engineering and became a sports and business manager. In 2006, he joined the executive board of the Deutsche Sporthilfe and became president in 2010. In 2020, he moved to the board of Deutsche Bank as staff manager.
