Water polo player Dirk Theismann represented West Germany in the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1984 the team won the bronze medal and in 1988 they finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match 14-13 against the Soviet Union. At his third Olympics in Barcelona in 1992, now representing re-unified Germany, the team disappointed and placed seventh. In 1989, he won the European title.
Domestically, Theismann played with SC Rote Erde Hamm until 1987, and then moved to Wadderfreunde Spandau 04 helping them win the European Champions Cup in 1989. By profession, Theismann became CEO of a technical laundry service company.
