German water polo player Lars Tomanek was on the squad eliminated in the group stage at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In 1989 he won the gold medal, and in 1995 the bronze medal, at the European Championships. In total, he won 295 international caps. Domestically, he played 32 years with Waspo Hannover.
Tomanek retired in 2014 and then turned briefly to coaching. In 2018, he coached the women’s national team for one season. By profession, he became an industrial and plant fitter.
