László Kuncz started as a swimmer with the Bp. Honvéd in 1967, and then in 1972 switched to water polo. Three years later, in his first appearance in the first division, he scored five goals against FTC and was quickly selected for the Hungarian national team. Between 1976 and 1983 he was a player with OSC and, with his new team, won the national championship title twice (1978,1983). In 1979 they also won the European Cup and the Super Cup. Kuncz spent two spells (1983-1987 and 1990-1992 with Vasas, where he won another championship and added victories in the European Cup (1984) and European Cup Winner’s Cup (1986). He won the Hungarian Cup three times during his career (1983, 1984, 1992) and played a total of 330 first class matches in Hungary. In between the periods with Vasas, Kuncz spent 1987-1990 working in West-Germany and played for Wuppertal in the German League during that time.

Between 1976 and 1985 he had 200 caps in the Hungarian national team. He was third at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, second at the World Championship in 1982 and at the European Championships in 1983 and third at the European Championships in 1981. After completing his career as an athlete, he worked as a coach, mostly for junior teams. He graduated from the College of Health in 1981 with a degree in Public Health Epidemiology. He graduated as a sports teacher in 2003 and opened a sportswear store after retiring.
