Alfonso Buonocore made his first appearance at the Olympics as a swimmer in 1952, when he was eliminated in round one and ranked joint-45th (with Egypt’s Dorri Abdel Kader) in the 100 metres freestyle. At the 1955 Mediterranean Games, he won a bronze medal in that event. Domestically, he set an Italian national record in the 200 metres freestyle, but he was much more well-known as a water polo player with Canottieri Napoli, with whom he was a national champion in 1951 and 1958. Internationally, he won a gold medal with the Italian team at the 1955 Mediterranean Games and came in fourth in the tournament at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He later competed at the masters’ level and, by career, was an accountant. His son, Fabrizio, represented Italy in the water polo tournaments at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Games, in addition to a host of other international competitions.
