Shuji Doi attended the Faculty of Law at Waseda University, during which time he competed in water polo at the 1932 Olympics. During his training as an army lieutenant he developed a bacterial infection and died at the Hiroshima Army Hospital. Doi was the first Japanese Olympian to die as a victim of the Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars. His wife and other family members died in Hiroshima from the atomic bomb.
