Jihei Furusho grew up in Kumamoto and later attended Waseda University. He started as a breaststroke swimmer but only became successful as a water polo goalkeeper. In 1945 he became first president of the Shiroya Co., Ltd., a clothing factory and cleaning company. He continued to play a major role in promoting sports in the Kumamoto prefecture, in particular in developing water polo.
