Marc van Belkum was the youngest of four brothers who all played water polo in the Netherlands during the 1980s and 1990s. Van Belkum spent most of his career with De Zijl/LGB in Leiden, in addition to playing for a couple of other Dutch teams, before spending a stint in Italy. In 1986 Marc and his brother Stan were part of the Dutch squad that placed 14th at the World Aquatics Championships in Madrid. The two brothers would also compete together at the European Aquatics Championships in 1987 and 1993. In 1992 Marc was selected to compete at the Barcelona Olympics, playing in all seven matches with the Dutch team. His niece Iefke won gold with the Dutch water polo team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
