Anatol Grinţescu played for 12 years on the Romanian national water polo team, recording 85 goals and earning 176 caps. He retired in the early 1970s and took over as a coach of the national team, leading them at the 1972, 1976, and 1980 Olympics. Grinţescu then went into sports administration, serving as secretary-general of the Romanian Water Polo Federation for 18 years, and then becoming President of the Federation in 2008.
