Biography

Ilie Slăvei was part of the Romanian water polo team during the 1970s and 1980s, competing at the Olympics, World Championships, and the European Championships. At club level Slăvei represented Rapid București where he won three national titles (1972, 1976, 1980). In 1976 he just missed out on a medal at the Montréal Olympics when the Romanian team finished fourth. He was later honoured with the Order of Sports Merit; 3rd Class for his performance at the Games. Four year later Slăvei was part of the Romanian team that competed at the Moskva Olympics, this time placing ninth. After his retirement he moved to Germany, supporting the Romanian community and sports clubs in Köln (Cologne). His brother Florin also competed alongside him in the pool at the Montréal and Moskva Olympics.
