Leon Nahon was active in both rugby and water polo as a schoolboy and was quite proficient in the former, becoming captain of the Transvaal under-19 team during his tenure at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg. It was his water polo talents, however, that would lead him to represent South Africa on the international scene. He was first selected from the Transvaal provincial squad in 1957 to take part in water polo at that year’s Maccabiah Games. His other major tournament was the 1960 Summer Olympics, where South Africa came third in its preliminary pool after defeating Australia, tying the Netherlands, and losing against Yugoslavia. Nahon played as a fullback in the Australian and Yugoslavian matches, scoring the team’s only goal in its 1-7 defeat in the latter game. He was also active in swimming, tennis, golf, and squash.
