Biography

Before becoming a real estate tycoon Thio Gim Hock represented Singapore in water polo at multiple international tournaments. Thio was a keen swimmer and water polo player and competed in the latter at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics where the team finished tenth. He had better success at the Asian Games where he won silver in 1958 in Tokyo and 1966 in Bangkok. A year later he was part of the squad that won gold at the 1967 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, also in Bangkok.

After his sporting career Thio became involved in the redevelopment of Singapore, working on the reclamation project to transform the waterfront. In 2007 he became the chief executive of the property developer Overseas Union Enterprise (OUE), serving in the role until his retirement in 2019.
