Sarah Leonard

A top-class archer, Sarah Leonard was the daughter of a Baptist Minister. While most of her successes were confined to meetings of the Backwell Archers, and other nearby clubs, she did compete in both the Grand Western, which she won in 1906, and Grand National meetings. The latter being for the national title and, having finished sixth at Southampton in 1905, she was 11th at Cheltenham in 1921 when she was 59-years-of-age, however, she won the prize for the most hits at 50 yards.

Leonard married her cousin Everett in 1889. He was a member of a family of local Bristol colliery owners, of which he became a director. He was also a partner in the firm of coal merchants, Watkins and Leonard. He was a keen all-round sportsman and, as well as being a good rower, also played rugby and captained both Clifton and the Gloucestershire county team. He also played for the Western Counties on three occasions.
