Ronald Lopatny played water polo for Yugoslavia at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, winning a gold medal in 1968. He played domestically for Medveščak, then Napredak, playing with them from 1958-68, and then moved to Mladost, with whom he won three European Championships (1968-69, 1971) and Yugoslav titles (1969-71). Lopatny was twice named the best Yugoslav water polo player (1970-71). He also won two gold medals at the 1967 and 1971 Mediterranean Games.
Loptany retired from water polo in 1973 and started an upscale, exclusive restaurant in Zagreb. He was twice married, to the famous singer Tereza Kesovija and the actress Mia Begović
