Biography

Many times the champion of New South Wales Don Mitchell also won national titles over a 12 year period in the 70s and 80s. The pinnacle of his career came at the 1980 Moscow Olympics where placed seventh, albeit in a boycott weakened event. Mitchell was a teacher by profession, working mainly in New South Wales, but he also taught for a while in Canada. He was also active in weightlifting after his retirement from competition and coached at a series of clubs around Sydney. He was involved in the Academy of Western Sydney Sport and the NSW Institute of Sport and served as a director of the ANZ Stadium (the former Sydney Olympic stadium). Mitchell died in November 2010, just three months after being appointed principal of the Wingham High School.
