Austrian weightlifter Walter Legel finished third in the 1974 European Championships lightweight class as his best international result. He participated in four editions of the Olympics from 1960 at Rome to 1980 at Moscow but could not qualify for the 1964 Tokyo and the 1968 Mexico-City Olympics.
His best Olympic result was a tenth place at the 1976 Montréal Games. At München he was disqualified for doping irregularities with ephedrine, confirmed immediately after his competition.
